"Oi D.A.,

C A R L O S

"Frampton Comes Alive! is a double live album by Peter Frampton released in 1976, and one of the best-selling live albums in the United States.
Following four solo albums with little commercial success, Frampton Comes Alive! was a breakthrough for the artist.

Released on January 6, 1976, it debuted on the charts at 191.
The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 the week ending April 10, 1976, and was inthe top spot for a total of 10 weeks. It was the best-selling album of 1976, selling over 6 millionin the U.S. and became one of the best-selling live albums to date.

Frampton Comes Alive! was voted "Album of the year" in the 1976 Rolling Stone readers poll.
It stayed on the chart for 97 weeks and was still #14 on Billboard's 1977 year-end album chart.

The most recognizable songs from the album are "Show Me the Way", "Baby, I Love Your Way", and "Do You Feel Like We Do", all of which were released as singles, and continue to receivemuch airplay on classic rock radio stations. In January 2001, a 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the album was released, containing fouradditional tracks that were not included on the original version (although one of these was recorded in a radio studio as part of a broadcast, and does not form part of the main concert programme).

The track sequence is also significantly different, to more accurately reflect the set list used inthe original concerts.
Frampton produced the completely remixed and extended album, and played an impromptu live, with the original band from the album at Tower Records in Los Angeles to help promote the release.

The album was recorded in summer and fall 1975, primarily at Winterland in San Francisco, California and the Long Island Arena in Commack, New York.
The Winterland recordings were recorded on a 24 track master recorder.

Other concerts were recorded on a 16 track recorder.
Recordings from four different shows were used for the original album. Master tapes were recorded at 15 inches per second using professional Dolby "A" noise reduction. The live album was originally intended as a single LP disc, but at the suggestion of A&M Records additional shows were recorded and the album expanded to two LPs for release.

During the concerts, Frampton principally used a distinctive black custom Gibson Les Paul electric guitar (with three humbucking pickups as opposed to the usual two). Although his use of the talk box guitar effect was limited to only two songs on the album, as a result of "Show Me theWay" being released as a single the talk box sound became strongly associated with Frampton.

On the special features for the "Live in Detroit" concert DVD , Frampton commented that some difficulty was encountered in the mixing after the cord to the bass drum mic got pulled, accidentally causing the mic to face at a 90-degree angle from the drum head.

The double album was released in the U.S. with a special reduced list price of $7.98, only $1.00 more than the standard $6.98 of most single-disc albums in 1976.
The album was pressed in automatic sequence, with sides one and four on one record, followed by sides two and three on the other. This arrangement was intended to make it easier to listen through the whole album in sequence on automatic record changers."Personnel

"Night of the Guitar" - Hammersmith Odeon - Londres 26/11/1988 (bootleg)

Asia – Spirit Of The Night – The Phoenix Tour – Live in Cambridge 2009 (2010)

Being a loyal Asia follower I am always keen to discover any new release this legendary UK quartet comes up with.

Who can forget 1982 when the band burst into the scene with their self-titled debut that hosted worldwide hits such as Heat Of The Moment and Only Time Will Tell.

A few other albums (Alpha, Astra) followed this hit packed wonder but the same success was never equaled and after a flurry of line up changes somewhere in the early nineties the band finally dismantled with the departure of singer/bass player John Wetton.
But no reason to mourn for the fans since founding member and keyboard legend Geoff Downes rejuvenated the band by introducing John Payne to the band.

Under their rules a number of great, yet more progressive and bombastic albums like Aqua, Aria, Arena, Aura and Silent Nation followed. In 2007 the old Asia reunited, inspired by the collaboration between Wetton and Downes on their Icon projects, which led to the appropriately named album Phoenix.

Although I have lost count on the number of albums so far (studio, compilation and live) it's nevertheless still a pleasant challenge to listen to a new Asia album once more. This time the one on offer is a live recording named Spirit Of The Night, recorded in Cambridge UK in 2009 as part of the Phoenix tour and sees Asia perform in their original '82 line up consisting of Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton.

Whether I am happy with this release is not an easy question.
As far as the performance is concerned I can only say yes. John Wetton's great and characteristic voice is still able to carry the songs throughout and the band sounds solid.

More professional than sparkling though, but the recording captures the atmosphere really well. Only the keyboard sounds a bit distant now and then but it does not disturb the experience.

Highlights are hard to pick since the show is quite an even affair, but both My Own Time and Midnight Sun have not featured on many Asia live shows but remind me of how good these songs actually are.

A real surprise listing is the powerful Asia version of Emerson Lake and Palmer's Fanfare For The Common Man. Clearly with thanks to drummer Carl Palmer who steps in the spotlight on a drum solo.
On the other hand, looking at the track list a familiar deja-vu pops up.

It's clear the band has chosen to recycle the old crackers once more whereas I feel there were good reasons to put in some more of the new ones apart from Never Again and An Extraordinary Life.

Maybe the band should have waited a few more months and release a live album including tracks of their 2010 release Omega.

That way they could have shown the world even more what the reincarnated Asia is capable of on stage. An Asia album is never a rip off, certainly when performed like this, but the track list of Spirit Of The Night leaves it more an item for the hard core fans.

I hope the next live album is not a copy of this one with two tracks from Omega. A missed opportunity."

Thousand Days of Yesterdays "A Tribute to Captain Beyond"

"Thousand days of yesterdays... and it still sounds great., June 11, 2000
By bruceski (FLA United States) -This review is from: Tribute to Captain Beyond (Audio CD)

This rather strange concept was to gather Swedish and other European rock bands to do a tribute to the well respected but somewhat obscure debut by Captain Beyond.

Captain Beyond was a minor "super-group" in the early 70s that gathered together ex-members of Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Johny Winter. In the words of CBs drummer (the incredible Bobby Caldwell) and guitarist (the innovative Rhino) the purpose of the band was to "simply explore the various schemes of odd time signatures and arrangements." On their debut they were dramatically sucessful.

They fused together hard rock with progressive and jazz time signatures to form an accessible, but challenging brand of rock-n-roll. But if you're interested in this cd, you probably already knew that...On to the disc.
As on all tributes, some of the material is better than others. However, there is more consistancy on this one than most. Perhaps that is due to the unusual nature of this tribute, which uses a differant band for each song, despite the cd being based on two side long suites. Aside from the Flower Kings, I had never heard of any of the bands that perform here. I must admit I was a bit concerned when I saw that the first band was called Pentagram (who do a great version of Dancing Madly Backwords). But I digress..Most of the music focuses on the rock side of CB and sticks fairly close to the original arrangements. This works pretty well, although the vocal (and lyrical) interpretations at times feel very European and take some adjusting too. (Actually, some of the attempts at the lyrics are comical).

On the other hand, the two exceptions to this are probably my favorite tracks on the cd. These are: The Flower Kings doing a long, slowed version of Raging River of Fear, and Orchid Leaves doing Starglow Energy (its a bonus track, I know it wasn't on the original CB album) as an acoustic guitar piece with a female vocalist.

Also interesting are two other bonus tracks sung in Swedish. The title track, done by Five Fifteen with guest Nik Turner of Hawkwind, is also excellent. Overall this cd is a well intentioned and mostly sucessful tribute to a band that deserved much more recognition."
History
The original line-up for Captain Beyond were singer Rod Evans, drummer Bobby Caldwell, guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt, bassist Lee Dorman and keyboards Lewie Gold.
Evans was the original lead singer for Deep Purple and probably best known for his vocals on their 1968 debut chart-breaker "Hush".

Reinhardt and Dorman had played in Iron Butterfly; Dorman, in particular, played on most of Butterfly's early albums, including their 1968 breakthrough In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.Caldwell had come to prominence playing in the group Johnny Winter And with Rick Derringer and Johnny Winter.

Lewie Gold was a well respected keyboardist from Florida. He left due to personal reasons before the first album was recorded. This line-up recorded the self-titled debut album, released in 1972.

Following this album Caldwell left the band to join Derringer and was replaced by drummer Brian Glascock.
Also joining the band around this time were Reese Wynans (later of Double Trouble) on keyboards and Guille Garcia on congas. The record company's chosen producer, Giorgio Gomelsky, did not like Glascock's drumming and requested a new drummer.Glascock was released and Martin Rodriguez was brought in on drums on the recommendation of Garcia.
This six man line-up recorded the group's second album, Sufficiently Breathless. Tension during the recording of Sufficiently Breathless led to Evans quitting.
The original line-up reformed later in 1973 for a US tour but the band split up at the end of the year.

The band reformed in 1976 Willy Daffern on vocals, and Bobby Caldwell, Rhino and Lee Dorman completing the line-up. They then recorded the band's third album Dawn Explosion on Warner Bros., but broke up the in the year (1978).

Reinhardt and Caldwell reformed Captain Beyond in 1998 with Jimi Interval on vocals, Dan Frye on keyboards, and Jeff Artabasy on bass.
Since then they have been performing at shows and have released a four track EP.

In 1999, Swedish record label Record Heaven released a tribute to Captain Beyond entitled Thousand Days of Yesterday. The album features fellow 70s rockers Pentagram playing "Dancing Madly Backwards".

Captain Beyond once again disbanded in 2003 when lead guitarist Larry Reinhardt developed cancer. He was treated but told he had months to live. Larry has since passed all his doctors expectations and continues to make music and even released his first solo album, entitled "Rhino's Last Dance."Captain Beyond

The organizers say that the five nights of concerts will provide 7{ hours of music programming.
An in-depth documentary on the history of the guitar will also be produced and provided to broadcasters, according to an announcement the organizers planned to make Friday.

Broadcasters in 40 countries will be targeted to sign up for the festival broadcasts, but so far only Spain's TVE has agreed to take the festival.
The five concerts will be themed and each will headline five of the guitarists playing a set.
