CAIN - Hard rock

Cain was a hard rocking Twin Cities band that tried to take on the music industry in the mid-seventies. Their two small label albums were serious hard rock guitar extravaganzas, but with great fun original tunes, raucous lead vocals, and sweet backing vocals. Their influences ranged from the guitar of Deep Purple and Robin Trower, the majesty of Queen, and the vocal harmonies of Styx

Cain's roots went back a number of years. In 1969, the Twin Cities band The Bananas went through some personnel changes. Guitarist Lloyd Forsberg, bassist Dave Elmeer, and keyboardist Al Dworsky brought in Jiggs Lee on vocals and Mike Mlazgar on drums. Jiggs (from the Grasshoppers) and Mike (from Crow!) replaced Jim Offerman and Joe Soucheray. A name change was desired and Lloyd came up with "Cain." Like many local bands, Cain performed at teen clubs and school dances. Eventually, they worked their way up to college shows and started to gain a "heavy" reputation outside of the Twin Cities. Along the way, Mike Mlazgar was replaced by Tom Osfar and Al Dworsky was replaced by Jerry Magee. 

Of course, Cain started writing their own material. The popular ballad "Katy" was written by their next keyboardist, Chas Carlson. Their tours took them to neighboring states with gigs in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Carbondale. They worked clubs with other Midwest bands like Styx, Kansas, and Cheap Trick. More personnel changes occurred before they went in to the studio to record their first album in 1975: Tom Osfar was replaced by Kevin DeRemer (from the Everett James Band) and keyboards were dropped from the line-up entirely.  Their first hard rocking album was titled "A Pound of Flesh" (a reference to Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice"). It's not known what the band thought of the cover image that ASI Records' marketing department created. 

The album's guitar sound brings to mind Richie Blackmore; the main riff of the album's opener "Queen of the Night" is in the same vein as Deep Purple's "Burn." Lloyd's Stratocaster sound ventures into Robin-Trower-land on "Badside." The album features an ode to girlie magazines on "If the Right Don't Get You the Left One Will," a big power ballad with "Katy," and an epic rocker with "All My Life." 

They supported the album with tours that took them as far as Texas. 

In 1977, the second (and last) album in their ASI contract, "Stinger," was released. This album was just as hard rocking as the first, but the song writing really advanced. The Queen influences come out strong on "Welcome to the Dance" and the title track "Stinger" (which was a big live favorite when Jiggs broke out the burning book!). The album's Big Power Ballad was "The Minstrel Song." 

A third album was only half completed in 1978 when disco and other pressures took its toll on the group. Dave and Jiggs left the group, while Lloyd and Kevin continued on as Cain for another year before calling it quits.

The key players were Nicky Gebhard (born in Berlin) a self-taught drummer, who started in jazz-rock with the Günther Boas Band, and one Reimund Eberth, a blues guitarist and singer.

Jean-Jacques Kravetz - 1972 Kravetz

Jean Jacques Kravetz is a french multi-instrumentalist (piano, keyboard, sax) and fruitful composer who spent his whole career in Germany. He first made a name in the Hamburg musical scene. In relative discretion he published a solo effort simply called Kravetz (1972). In this solo excursion he was accompanied by the famous Udo Lindenberg on drums. Musically, the album is a pleasant combination between heavy fuzzy organs and krauty improvisations. Kravetz is mostly known for being the keyboardist of Frumpy, Kin Ping Meh and Atlantis. Today he is recognised as one of the great pioneers of German rock. ”

Asia - Um Prog anos 80

Após o término do King Crimson em 1974, vários planos para a formação de um supergrupo envolvendo o baixista John Wetton foram cogitados, incluindo o projeto British Bulldog com Bill Bruford e Rick Wakeman em 1976. Em 1977, Bruford e Wetton reuniram-se no UK junto com o guitarrista Allan Holdsworth e o tecladista e violinista Eddie Jobson. Seu álbum homônimo de estréia foi lançado em 1978. Em 1980, após o fim do UK e a saída de Wetton do Wishbone Ash, um novo supergrupo foi sugerido envolvendo Wetton, Wakeman, Carl Palmer e Trevor Rabin, mas Wakeman desistiu pouco antes. No ano seguinte Wetton e o guitarrista Steve Howe começaram a trabalhar juntos, com Howe, recém saido do Yes, no início do mesmo ano. Howe e Wetton reuniram-se então com o tecladista do Yes e do The Buggles, Geoff Downes. Carl Palmer reuniu-se também postariormente. Trevor Rabin também foi considerado para a banda e chegou a gravar alguns materiais junto, mas desistiu para aceitar a oferta de Chris Squire e Alan White no qual tornou-se o novo Yes. As primeiras ofertas para a banda foram consideradas decepcionantes para os críticos1 e para os fãs do rock progressivo tradicional, que consideraram sua música muito mais próxima ao AOR. Entretanto a banda cativou fãs de bandas do começo da década de 1980 tais como Journey, Boston e Electric Light Orchestra.

Asia é uma banda de rock progressivo formada em 1981 como um supergrupo de ex-integrantes de Yes, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer e The Buggles. Alguns sucessos da banda são Heat Of the Moment, Only Time Will Tell e Wildest Dreams, músicas do primeiro álbum da banda, lançado em 1982. Posteriormente, as formações foram mudando, sendo a mais significativa, a saída de John Wetton em 1991, e a subsequente entrada de John Payne, no baixo e vocal.

O primeiro álbum da banda, Asia, teve sucesso comercial considerável, permanecendo por nove semanas no primeiro lugar das paradas dos Estados Unidos, impulsionado pelos singles "Only Time Will Tell" e "Heat of the Moment", ambos banstante usados um eventos esportivos naquele país. A turnê por aquele país também foi bem sucedida, com lotação em todas as datas entre 1982 e 1983, enquanto que a MTV também mostrava bastante seus videoclipes. Foi considerado pela Billboard o álbum do ano. Downes a esta altura detinha o posto de tecladista com maior número de teclados em um palco. Usava cerca de dezessete instrumentos em turnê, marca que não foi superada até hoje. A banda tornou-se uma das pioneiras da segunda fase do rock progressivo ao evitar as longas composições da primeira fase da década de 1970, um formato mais atrativo para as rádios. Álbuns seguintes como 90125 (Yes) seguiram os passos do Asia.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - sem Palmer e sem Lake!???

1978 foi um ano de crise para o ELP. Eles estavam cansados e sua música não tinha mais aquela inspiração. Eles se separaram por cansaço e alguns conflitos pessoais... 

Em 1985, Emerson e Lake reformaram o Emerson, Lake & Palmer, e o chamaram de Emerson, Lake & Powell desta vez com o baterista de heavy metal Cozy Powell. Palmer não aceitou participar da reunião, preferindo se manter com o Asia. Rumores também ligavam Bill Bruford à nova formação, mas o ex-baterista do Yes estava com o King Crimson e seu novo grupo Earthworks. Emerson, Lake & Powell teve sucesso razoável, com o single Touch and Go gerando espaço nas rádios e na MTV. Apesar disso, a tensão já antiga entre Lake e Emerson resurgiu na turnê de 1986. Emerson e Palmer posteriormente se uniram a Robert Berry para formar a banda 3, que não obteve sucesso.

Seguem estes registros, que embora não sejam grandes obras, constam na história deste grande grupo, e devem constar na coleção de fãs do ELP...

Carl Palmer Band "Working Live, Vol. 01 and 02"

Para completar a trilogia da "Carl Palmer Band" o Carlos nos presenteia com os dois primeiros.

É óbvio que para um lobo nada demais postar o terceiro e depois os dois primeiros, mas para aqueles que aqui já frequentam com a devida paciência nada mais espanta,rs

Realmente como disse no post e ao Carlos eu não conhecia este trabalho e tenho meus motivos, apesar de acompanhar a carreira deles desde o inicio no Nice e etc, houve épocas em que fiquei no limbo musical onde comia ou ouvia algum disco novo, e isso aconteceram várias vezes e vejo que agora estou podendo retomar contato com estes trabalhos.

E mesmo hoje não poderia comprar tudo o que gostaria de possuir e arrumando meus arquivos cheguei aos 600 discos duplos, simples e etc e ainda não estou na metade, mesmo que fosse um lobo triliardário creio que não poderia possuir um arsenal assim não fosse a net; e mesmo que nos queimassem como nas inquisições de todas as religiões não mudaria um mm do que fiz e faço; a bem do quê as religiões deveriam cuidar do espirito de seus seguidores que ajudariam e muito uma sociedade já carcomida por falsos moralismos e falsos líderes.

Sejamos todos felizes realizando os poucos sonhos que ainda nos são permitidos e mais uma vez grato ao Carlos que ainda me mandou mais algumas jóias que postarei em breve.Recorded live on July 19, 2001.

Do we enjoy technical virtuosity performed at blinding speed or the use of an instrument to allow the deepest, most soulful expressions of our emotions?
Or is it both?

The Carl Palmer Band walk a thin line of technical virtuosity on their Working Live Vol. 1 and 2.
Palmer is the drummer extraordinaire late of Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame.

The album features a power trio of himself, guitarist Shawn Baxter, and bassist Dave Marks, who re-interpret many of ELP’s classics catalogue on these CD’s.
No one could disagree that this band is tight, consummately professional and brilliantly talented as technicians of their instruments.

But Palmer and his group explore classical works in a more European rock context, which is heavily oriented on electric guitar.
Baxter is a young master when it comes to technique, but he has yet to learn the ability to make his guitar a voice for himself, allowing the listener to appreciate his love for the music he’s playing.

With Baxter, the band sounds a lot like Van Halen playing “Carmina Burana”, “Hoedown”, “Trilogy” and a host of other ELP-inspired takes on classical compositions.

This is fine if you’re into Van Halen and if that’s the direction Palmer had in mind. However, the original classical compositions are trifled with a little too readily by Baxter.

ELP made fresh masterpieces out of the ashes of Aaron Copland, Carl Orff and many others.

ELP’s interpretations express ranges of emotion which are completely missed here. It’s unfortunate because Baxter certainly is gifted enough to play anything but may not yet possess the maturity to explore his own feelings through the pieces ELP so carefully reconstructed for rock audiences.

Palmer consistently shows why he’s considered one of the finest rock drummers in history.
He has developed marvelous tones here, performing quick toccatas with amazing finesse while pounding out a regular bass rhythm that keeps Marks on track.

The drum solos on both disks are filled with tremendous expression as Palmer explores his capacious kit with the use of rolls that alternately flutter with the quiet authority of an eagle’s wing to bombastic, cannon-like pummeling reminiscent of a war-torn battleground.

Palmer has put together a new trio, conscribing guitarist Paul Bielatovitcz and bassist Stuart Clayton. The new Palmer band is tapping a harder-edged, metal progressive rock sound. It will be fascinating to see the results of this new trio’s work.

Your enjoyment of the Working Live CD’s will depend entirely on how you answer the questions posed in the first paragraph.

If you appreciate masterful, blistering guitar runs that are devoid of emotional involvement and Palmer’s ever steady and highly experimental approach to music, then this album is a gem.

But if you prefer music that reaches inside of you and rends the very elements of your spirit, you might want to look towards purchasing the first eponymous ELP album, Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery or Trilogy

Mais uma vez o Carlos me vem com suas descobertas e cada uma mais difícil do que a outra e não pensem que acho ruim, prq não acho mesmo; é que fico puto da vida qdo vou atrás de informações dos chamados "entendidos" ou "blogs dos blogs" e etc e tal e nem nas majors vc consegue uma informação decente.

Claro que encontro informações de algo que quero postar até em mandarim (acho que forcei agora mas vamos lá...) mas em português?

Em que século estamos?
Porra o Brasil não se emenda mesmo?
Até quando seremos aculturados ou acomodados?

Música é lazer mas é arte também, óbvio, e arte aqui é tratada com desprezo mesmo, prq parece não interessar; e pode ser que eu esteja completamente errado, mas qdo vc digita qualquer bandinha aí de qualquer ritmo vc acha paginas e mais paginas, só que ao digitar algo com um pouco mais de qualidade é como se aparecesse uma luz vermelha e soasse o alarme.

Carl Palmer, simplesmente um dos maiores bateristas de todos os tempos, pertencente aos melhores grupos musicais do mundo e aqui com sua banda (????? juro como não acompanho tanto assim sua carreira receio falar besteira, mas eu nem sabia que ele tinha uma!!!!) num trabalho ao vivo e recente.

Grato Carlos por sua boa vontade mais uma vez, vou ouvir com carinho e já está devidamente postado pra que mais possa como eu ter contato com o trabalho que ele ainda está fazendo.This album was recorded in 2007 at the Robin 2 in Bilston. It has not been released yet. Songs include the full version of ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, ‘Bitches Crystal’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and ‘Nutrocker’. ‘Pictures’ is particularly good since we re-worked the classic ELP version to work with a rock trio.

‘Bitches Crystal’ is the highlight for me in terms of my own bass work. I’ve since stepped down from my job in the band but hopefully this album will be released later this year. The cover shot is the band playing in Tivoli, Italy. Check out the Carl Palmer Band at www.carlpalmer.com

Track review of "Bitches Crystal"

Volume 3 represents the third chapter of celebrated drummer Carl Palmer's reinventions of past group works, including Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP).

His technical gifts are legendary, and with this live recording, the drummer instills a distant relative viewpoint of routes previously traversed.

On the ELP favorite "Bitches Crystal," guitarist Paul Bielatowicz re-fabricates an English folk theme into a power-packed rock regimen.

He elevates the primary melody into a brooding, guitar heavy rendition, supported by Stuart Clayton's steely bass lines and Palmer's surging press rolls and polyrhythmic backbeats.

Bielatowicz harmonizes Greg Lake's original vocal track and merges jazzy riffs with psycho hard-rock guitar soloing, where Palmer boosts the attack with massive press rolls and cymbals hits.

The guitar-driven band initiates a contrasting perspective to keyboardist Keith Emerson's polytonal forays during ELP's heyday.

Seu legado é considerado uma obra prima do Rock Progressivo e todas as parcerias que realizou após o ELP, apenas acrescentaram Master Pieces ao seu acervo.

The Best (1990)

The Best was a short-lived supergroup featuring Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer) on keyboards, John Entwistle (of The Who) on bass and vocals, Joe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang, and solo fame) on guitar and vocals, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers) on guitar, and Simon Phillips (the Jack Bruce Band, 801, the Jeff Beck Group; later of Toto) on drums. Relative unknown Rick Livingstone sang lead vocals (along with Walsh and Entwistle). Backing vocals were provided by Hamish, Angus and Fergus Richardson of the band Brother.

Dánae - Progressivo Argentino

Um grande som progressivo de nossos Hermanos argentinos. Não é de hoje que a Argentina apresenta bandas fantásticas, de cair o queixo com o som, a técnica, a precisão e qualidade instrumental. Segue mais uma, que o Ricardo tem a generosidade de nos presentear.

"...O Dánae está na estrada desde 1979, mas lançaram apenas dois álbuns de estúdio. O primeiro, em 2004 (Dánae) e o segundo em 2013 (Medusa) e que mostra bem a disposição deste grupo.

Não há destaque para nenhum instrumento. Tocam em harmonia e cada um sabe o que tem que fazer para alcançar o resultado. Os melhores trabalhos instrumentais são assim, o resultado de um todo, sem estrelismo e sem exageros. Apenas música pela música, sem fronteiras.

O grande barato de ouvir algo desconhecido é justamente a surpresa pelo que vem depois e minha dica é essa..."

Dánae biography

Formed in 1979 with RUSH, YES, LED ZEPPELIN and DEEP PURPLE plus national hero act CRUCIS, DÁNAE is an Argentinean instrumental quartet with a very long experience in the underground rock scene of Rosario (Santa Fe), and yet, a very minimal discography so far. DÁNAE band kept itself quite busy during the 80s displaying its powerful sound based on the dual guitars' interplaying and the construction of a robust rhythm section: with a reasonable amount of complexity and lots of stamina, DÁNAE built and established a style on the heavy side of progressive rock, without letting go of the melodic and bombastic elements of standard progressive symphonic rock. Eventually, the band's activity diminished in favor of its individual members' other interests and jobs, and so it dissolved in the early 90s. 

But, again, the unpredictable winds of change brought a new era for DÁNAE when it reformed in the year 2000: with the original energy fully reborn, the band managed to record its self-produced namesake debut album in 2004, at "Del Camote Records" Studios. For the time of the album's debut, the foursome presented it at the Funes venue, in the context of the celebration of Rosario's 130th anniversary. As the new millennium goes through its second decade, DÁNAE finds itself busy, on and off, compiling old material that didn't make it in the first album and writing new material in order to complete the repertoire for an eventual sophomore release. And, of course, performing live whenever the occasion rises.

Este é um post bem das antigas do Som Mutante. Ele data de 2008, um dos primeiros post do DOA, e por algum mistério, não chegou a ser publicado. Trata-se de uma união bem única... Um Bluesman com um ícone do Prog... Ao ouvir a guitarra de Gary Moore substituindo os solos de Keith Emerson, confesso que fiquei muito surpreso, pois não achava isso possível. Sempre tive a curiosidade de ver/ouvir ELP com guitarra, e esta união deu uma pequena amostra disso... Segue o post do Dead, na íntegra:

Gary Moore feat. Greg Lake

Bem, se vc for fuçador e procurar vai achar algo talvez relativo à isso; esta união fantástica que rendeu alguns shows realmente maravilhosos.

Neste caso esse é um daqueles cds que vc acha naquelas bancas no fundo de uma loja que está vendendo qqr porcaria que esteja fazendo sucesso no momento; o que foi meu caso à época, ao notar uma capinha muito xumbrega com a foto dos dois e o título acima.
Bem, conhecendo um pouco da discografia de cada um e olhando os detalhes, dá pra perceber que é aquilo que sobra em gravadoras; que repassam pra outras e mais outras e de repente alguém publica sem nenhum critério de data; de onde saiu tal música; quem tocou nas mesmas, etc e tal. Um encarte bem pobre como tudo que vêm dessas pseudo gravadorazinhas.
Acontece, que sou meio maluco e banquei a aposta (R$10 contos,ré,ré,ré), e qual não foi minha surpresa ao ouvir um Gary Moore em vários estágios de sua carreira, inclusive qdo começou a cantar pois não achava alguém que o agradasse. E como cantava mal....
Mas o melhor estava por vir, as quatro últimas músicas é que são relativas aos dois juntos em um show qqr de uma época qqr em um lugar qqr; e aí é que me vi frente a frente com dois gênios da música mundial num concerto fantástico!!!!!! Very,very,beautiful; inclusive qdo dividem seus sucessos maiores: Lucky Man com solo de guitarra ao invés dos teclados de Keith Emerson (até onde sei, isso não é comum...) e Parisienne Walkways com os vocais de Greg Lake ( e dá pra perceber que Gary arregaça sua guitarra, porque estava com um dos maiores vocalistas do mundo cantando sua música preferida). Chega de papo furado, acredito que vc vá gostar.
